Shrinebuilder Shrinebuilder at Berghain

Shrinebuilder on a Friday night in Berghain? Uh, ok then.

At first it feels like a trick. Maybe once inside this most amazing sounding of venues all of us beginner doom/drone-metal fans who have just discovered how much this music rocks will feel the doors shut closed behind us, the lights will go out and along with the real doom-metal fans we’ll instead have our senses pounded by the most annoying minimal-techno shit man can produce…now that would be hell.

Except the real fans would undoubtedly have doobies the size of your head on their person which could somehow make that crap sound bearable. The sound man would then remove said rubbish music, which was meant for later when the clubbers come in, and put on some Om or Saint Vitus and all would be well with the stoners in attendance. Being blitzed out of your mind I suppose the Berghain people thought they’d have a good laugh at all the hairy stoners reactions. Those kidders.

Shrinebuilder is the superband of doom-metal featuring members of Saint Vitus, Neurosis, Melvins and Om. A perfect combination of the sound of each of those bands, it’s heavy, doomy and will make you rock and sway and think, whoa, stoner-metal is coooolll. That and the sight of those big, hairy men on stage rocking out and sweating and tossing hair back in classic metal stage moves while assaulting you with the loudest show you’ve ever heard.

If you smoke too much before you go inside, don’t worry, the sound will hit you from four sides simultaneously and if it doesn’t loosen your bowels first it certainly will make you stand up straight so you’re safe. You can also just lean to the side and rock and sway shoulder to shoulder with your fellow stoners and get lost in the dirge. Sweet.

First up on the night is our very own Brace/Choir, opening up the evening with their very own brand of trance-rock to get us all in the mood. For them this comes hot on the heels of recent shows at Schokoladen (3rd)and the Dazzle Danz Club (10th) so they should be cookin by the time this show comes round. They better play “Pyro’s Dream” is all I can say.
